Particulars

Yoshihiro Nishimura was born on 1 April 1967 in Japan and developed a fascination with film and surreal art from an early age, later studying law before turning to filmmaking. He began creating short films and mastering special‑effects techniques while still in junior high, eventually producing his first independent feature, Anatomia Extinction, in 1995, which earned a Special Jury Award at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.

Nishimura gained international recognition by adapting his earlier work into the cult classic Tokyo Gore Police (2008), for which he wrote, directed, and performed the film’s signature gore‑laden makeup effects. He continued to shape the Japanese splatter genre with projects such as Helldriver, Mutant Girls Squad, and the horror anthology Welcome to Japan, while also contributing effects work to films by Sion Sono, Noboru Iguchi, and Yūdai Yamaguchi.

Celebrated as “the Tom Savini of Japan,” Nishimura founded his own effects studio and became known for pushing the limits of practical gore and visual creativity. He died on 25 May 2026 in Tokyo after a brief hospitalization for liver disease, leaving a legacy of groundbreaking horror cinema that inspired filmmakers worldwide.
