Particulars

Reverend Y. Nunggumajbarr was born on her motherland of Wuyagiba in south-east Arnhem Land and grew up at the Roper River Mission, later relocated to what is now the community of Ngukurr, where she began her life in the church. She trained for the priesthood at Nungalinya College in Darwin from 1974, studying theology and linguistics.

In 2009 she was ordained as the Anglican church's first-ever female Aboriginal priest at a ceremony in her home community of Numbulwar. She ministered services in Angurugu and Numbulwar for more than a decade until her retirement from the ministry in 2023, and was featured on the ABC's Compass program in 2011 for her work as the "Arnhem Land priest".

In her later years she also worked as a prolific artist, practising pandanus weaving and painting at the Numbulwar Numburindi Art Centre, and was remembered by her family as a strong cultural woman.
