William Orbit was a British music producer and musician whose innovative electronic production reshaped pop music in the 1990s and 2000s. Born William Mark Wainwright in 1956, he rose from London's underground electronic scene to become one of the most sought-after producers of his generation. His dreamy yet propulsive soundscapes blended trip-hop, jungle, and techno with mainstream pop sensibilities.

Orbit achieved global recognition through his collaboration with Madonna on her 1998 album Ray of Light, which won multiple Grammy Awards and is widely regarded as her artistic peak. He also produced chart-topping singles for All Saints, including Pure Shores and Black Coffee, and worked with Blur on their album 13, U2, Pink, and many others. As a solo artist and member of groups like Torch Song and Bassomatic, he released numerous albums and scored a UK Top 5 hit with his electronic rendition of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.

Throughout a career spanning four decades, Orbit sold over 200 million recordings worldwide and received multiple Grammy and Ivor Novello Awards. He died at home on 23 July 2026 at the age of 69.
