William C. Marshall
1918–2005William C. Marshall flew his Spitfire under Marlow Bridge to reach a date.
Particulars
William C. Marshall, while returning from a mission over France during World War II, diverted from his planned landing at Tangmere to Marlow, where his girlfriend awaited him at the Compleat Angler Inn. He flew his Spitfire under Marlow Bridge, whose headway matched the aircraft’s height, and performed a roll before landing.
The incident was reported, but Marshall avoided a court‑martial because of wartime conditions. He later served in the Battle of Britain, with 253 Squadron in North Africa, and with 91 'Nigeria' Squadron, being shot down twice and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross.
