Warder Cresson

1798–1860

Warder Cresson claimed consular rights and used a fake stamp after his Jerusalem appointment was rescinded.

Historical departure

Particulars

On May 17, 1844, Warder Cresson was appointed American consul at Jerusalem, the first person to hold that office. The appointment was rescinded eight days later by Secretary of State John C. Calhoun after Samuel D. Ingham said Cresson was a very weak‑minded man whose mind was out of order.

Warder Cresson continued to claim the rights of a consul until 1846, despite the US minister in Constantinople confirming his lack of credentials, and he used a fake consular stamp to provide protection to persons not eligible for American assistance.
