Uffa Fox
1898–1972Uffa Fox led sea scouts on a sailing trip that extended up the Seine towards Paris in 1921.
Particulars
In July 1921 Uffa Fox and a crew of nine sea scouts departed for the western Solent in a 27‑foot open whaler, believing they were on a camping and sailing trip.
Fox decided to extend the itinerary up the Seine toward Paris; after seven days they were within 70 kilometres of the city, then turned back and returned five days later, after which the coast guard met them as presumed castaways and Fox was relieved of his role in the sea scouts.
