Toyoo Tamamura was a Japanese essayist, painter, and winery owner. Born in Tokyo in 1945, he graduated from the University of Tokyo's French literature department and studied at the linguistics institute of the University of Paris. After working as an interpreter and translator, he turned to writing, publishing his debut essay collection "Paris Travel Miscellany Notes" in 1977 and "The Tetrahedron of Cooking" in 1980, establishing himself as a leading essayist on food and travel.

In 1991 he moved to Nagano Prefecture, where he ran a farm cultivating herbs and Western vegetables and opened the Villa d'Est winery in 2003. He became a prominent advocate for locally produced Shinshu wine, founding the Chikumagawa Wine Academy and serving as chairman of regional wine promotion bodies. He also resumed painting in the late 1980s after a serious illness, producing delicate works inspired by plants and fruit.

Tamamura appeared widely in Japanese media, including as a semi-regular panelist on the NTV quiz show "Quiz Sekai wa SHOW by Shobai!!" and as a commentator on TBS's "Broadcaster." He published numerous books on cuisine, travel, and countryside living, and was awarded the French Ordre du Mérite agricole in 2005.
