Toss Kelly

1862–1924

Kelly called Jack Glasscock out for interference, prompting a crowd rush that Glasscock halted.

Historical departure

Particulars

In a 1912 newspaper article, Toss Kelly recounted a call he had made in 1895. With two outs in the ninth inning and the home team down a run, baserunner Jack Glasscock attempted to steal second base and threw infield dirt at the second baseman, preventing a catch.

Kelly called Glasscock out for interference, angering spectators who rushed the field. Glasscock told the crowd the umpires’ call was correct, and his intervention saved Kelly from physical harm.
