Particulars

Tony Gatlif, born Boualem Dahmani in Algiers in 1948 to a Kabyle father and an Andalusian-Romani mother, was a French film director, screenwriter, composer, actor, and producer. After arriving in France in 1960 during the Algerian War of Independence, he struggled for years before directing his first feature, La Tête en ruine, in 1975. From the early 1980s his work became devoted to the Romani people of Europe, whose music and culture he celebrated across his career.
