He gained recognition for his film roles, notably Horton Fenty in 'Paint Your Wagon' (1969) and Piney Woods in 'Bang the Drum Slowly' (1973), where he also sang the title song. His television career was extensive, including appearances in 'The Young and the Restless,' 'Oz,' and 'Law & Order,' among others. Ligon had a notable stage career, performing in productions such as 'Your Own Thing' and 'Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.' He was also active in union work, serving as Chair of SAG-AFTRA's National Seniors Committee and on the Board of Directors of the New York Screen Actors Guild.
