Particulars

Tim Read was an Australian general practitioner and public-health campaigner who entered politics as a member of the Victorian Greens. He was elected to represent the inner-Melbourne seat of Brunswick in the Victorian Legislative Assembly at the 2018 state election, having previously stood unsuccessfully as the Greens candidate for the seat and as a federal candidate in the electorate of Wills at the 2013 election.

Before his political career, Read worked as a general practitioner and medical researcher, holding a PhD on the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections. He was known for his health-promotion activism, including being arrested for spray-painting health messages on tobacco billboards before his election.

During his final year in parliament, Read announced his retirement and used his remaining time as Member for Brunswick to campaign against the Victorian government's decision to close the health-promotion agency VicHealth. He fought a high-profile battle with metastatic cancer, having first had a melanoma removed seven years earlier.

Read was remembered by colleagues as one of the best-liked MPs in state parliament, respected for his conviction, integrity and wit. He died in September 2026 at age 64, ahead of a by-election made unnecessary by the state's scheduled November election.
