He became a cult icon playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1973 stage musical The Rocky Horror Show and its 1975 film adaptation The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a role that made him a household name. He earned Tony Award nominations for Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Spamalot, and an Olivier Award nomination for The Pirates of Penzance.

On screen, Curry delivered memorable villainous and character performances in films including Annie, Legend, Clue, The Hunt for Red October, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Three Musketeers, Muppet Treasure Island, Charlie's Angels, and Scary Movie 2. Curry was also a prolific voice actor, lending his distinctive voice to The Wild Thornberrys, FernGully, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and numerous other animated projects. He released three solo rock albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s and was nominated for a Grammy for his audiobook narration of A Series of Unfortunate Events.
