Therese zu Oettingen-Spielberg
1909–1991Therese zu Oettingen-Spielberg secured beer cellars on her estate to evacuate most of the museum's geological collection before the 1944 Munich bombing.
Particulars
During the 1944 bombing of Munich, Therese zu Oettingen-Spielberg was a paleontological curator at the Bavarian State Collection for Palaeontology and Geology. She worked covertly with paleontologist Ferdinand Broili and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität employee Georg Spiegler to save the museum's geological collection.
Oettingen-Spielberg ensured access to unused beer cellars on her family estate, Schloss Oettingen in the Nördlinger Ries, and through her and Spiegler's efforts most of the geological collection left Munich and survived the war unharmed; most of the paleontological collection was destroyed.
