1001–1066

Taillefer killed an English soldier and at least four others while singing at the Battle of Hastings.

Historical departure

Particulars

Taillefer, a Norman jongleur of unknown birth name, travelled to England in William the Conqueror’s train during the 1066 Norman conquest.

At the Battle of Hastings he sang the Chanson de Roland while juggling his sword; an English soldier who challenged him was killed, and he then charged the English lines alone, singing and killing at least four more English before being engulfed. He is not named on the Bayeux Tapestry, and some people do not believe his account.
