Steve Maslow was born on October 17, 1944, in Los Angeles, California. He began his career in the 1960s as a musician, playing with the psychedelic pop group the Strawberry Alarm Clock before moving behind the console.

In the late 1970s he shifted to film sound, teaming with veteran mixer Gregg Landaker. Maslow quickly earned a reputation for his precise mixing, contributing to landmark movies such as The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Speed (1994).

His work garnered three Academy Awards for Best Sound and four additional nominations, as well as a BAFTA for The Empire Strikes Back and an Australian AACTA for The Great Gatsby. Over a career that spanned more than four decades, he worked on more than 200 films, influencing the sound design of modern cinema.

Maslow died on April 28, 2026, at the age of 81. He was remembered by colleagues for his technical skill, collaborative spirit, and lasting contributions to the art of film sound.
