Spider Jorgensen

1919–2003

Spider Jorgensen received a borrowed glove from teammate Robinson for Opening Day after sending his own equipment to Syracuse.

Historical departure

Particulars

In 1947 Spider Jorgensen participated in the Dodgers' spring training in Cuba and, believing he would start the season with the Royals, sent his glove, bats and spikes to Syracuse, New York, where the Royals were to begin the season.

When injuries to infielders Cookie Lavagetto and Arky Vaughan caused the Dodgers to keep Jorgensen on the major‑league Opening Day roster, he faced playing without his equipment; his Montreal teammate Robinson, also debuting that day, lent Jorgensen his glove.
