Historical departure

Particulars

Sir James Shaw was created Baronet of Kilmarnock in 1809 and re‑created in 1813 by a second patent that provided a future interest for his nephew. He served as Member of Parliament for London until 1818, then as an alderman until his resignation in May 1843, and was appointed Chamberlain of London in 1831.

In 1831 he inadvertently invested £40,000 of city funds in fake Exchequer bills, began liquidating his property to repay the sum, and was cleared by a commission of enquiry. He resigned all his positions in 1843 due to long‑term illness and died on 22 October 1843; unmarried, his baronetcy passed to his nephew John Shaw.
