Particulars

Sílvio Barsetti was a Brazilian journalist and writer whose career was marked by sports journalism and investigative reporting on the inner workings of Brazilian football. He worked at major national outlets including Jornal dos Sports, Jornal do Brasil, O Dia, O Estado de S.Paulo, where he served as sports coordinator of the Rio de Janeiro branch, and the Terra portal. As a long-time CBF beat reporter, he covered the behind-the-scenes of the Brazilian national team and national football, and at the time of his death he was an advisor to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Barsetti built a reputation for investigative and backstage reporting on Brazilian football, and in 2016 he was heard by the Senate's CPI da Máfia do Futebol, which investigated corruption allegations involving FIFA and CBF officials. He also devoted himself to literature, writing books including 'A Farra dos Guardanapos – O Último Baile da Era Cabral', which reconstructed the rise and fall of former Rio governor Sérgio Cabral, and 'O Outro Lado do Poder – A História da Política Brasileira pela Ótica das Prostitutas'.

A declared supporter of América-RJ, Barsetti was remembered by colleagues as a witty, sharp and combative journalist with impeccable writing. He died on 12 October 2026 in Rio de Janeiro at age 61 while undergoing treatment for skin cancer.
