Sidney Reilly
1873–1925Sidney Reilly faked his death, stowed away to Brazil, and allegedly saved a British expedition and Major Fothergill, receiving money, a passport, and passage to Britain.
Particulars
After his release, his father told Sidney Reilly that his mother was dead and that his biological father was her Jewish doctor, Mikhail A. Rosenblum. Distraught, Reilly faked his death in Odessa harbour and stowed away aboard a British ship bound for South America.
In Brazil he used the name Pedro, worked as a dock worker, road mender, plantation labourer, and cook for a British intelligence expedition in 1895. He allegedly saved the expedition and Major Charles Fothergill when hostile natives attacked; Rosenblum seized a British officer's pistol and killed the attackers. Fothergill rewarded him with £1,500, a British passport, and passage to Britain, where Pedro became Sidney Rosenblum.
