Sid Krofft

Sid Krofft, co-creator of 'H.R. Pufnstuf,' 'Land of the Lost' and other fantastical children's shows, has died at 96.
Particulars
Sid Krofft was born Cydus Yolas on July 30, 1929, in Montreal, Canada, to a family of Greek and Hungarian descent. He began performing as a puppeteer in vaudeville and with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, later creating a one‑man puppet act that toured nightclubs and burlesque venues.
In the late 1960s he and his brother Marty founded Sid & Marty Krofft Pictures and launched the groundbreaking children’s series H.R. Pufnstuf in 1969. The show’s vivid colors, large‑headed puppets, and fantastical plots defined the brothers’ signature style, which they applied to numerous other programs such as Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and The Bugaloos throughout the 1970s.
Krofft continued to develop television projects and occasional revivals into the 2000s, and his work retained a cult following among both original viewers and new audiences. He died on April 10, 2026, at the age of 96, leaving a legacy of imaginative, low‑budget fantasy that shaped American children’s television.
