In 1837 Shimada Toranosuke travelled to Edo and issued a challenge to Otani Nobutomo, the city’s most highly regarded swordsman; during that duel Otani allowed Shimada to win.

Shimada then requested instruction from Inoue Gensai, who advised him to study under Otani; skeptical, Shimada challenged Otani again, was defeated, and Otani subsequently accepted Shimada as his student.
