Particulars

Scott Hylands (born 1943) was a Canadian actor whose career spanned more than five decades across film, television and theatre. After studying theatre at the University of British Columbia, he moved to New York and began performing off‑Broadway before joining the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He made his film debut in the 1969 suspense picture Daddy's Gone A‑Hunting and went on to appear in a variety of American TV shows, often cast as tough‑guy characters and villains.

In the 1980s Hylands became a familiar face on North‑American television, most notably as Detective Sergeant Frank Giannini on the cop drama Night Heat, which aired on both Canada’s CTV and the U.S. CBS network. He also had guest roles on series such as Cannon, The Waltons, Kung Fu, Baretta and Ironside. His stage work included a praised performance as Mercutio in a Los Angeles production of Romeo and Juliet.

Hylands continued to work steadily into the 2000s, appearing in films, TV movies and series, including a recurring role in the third season of Fargo. He was regarded by critics as one of Canada’s most versatile actors, admired for his longevity and ability to portray a wide range of characters. He died in 2026 at the age of 83.
