Russel Farnham
1784–1832Russel Farnham walked across the Bering Strait in 1814 to deliver £40,000 and sale papers to John Jacob Astor in New York.
Particulars
Russel Farnham was entrusted with £40,000 in sterling bills and papers concerning the sale of the Astoria trading post, and Wilson P. Hunt ordered him to deliver them to John Jacob Astor via St. Petersburg. He crossed the ice sheet across the Bering Straits on foot, suffered exposure and malnutrition, and ate the tops of his boots, but reached St. Petersburg, then Paris, and finally New York, becoming the first American to complete the journey.
Another account says Farnham left with Hunt on the Pedler, was dropped off on the Kamchatka coast on April 3, 1814, and after arriving in St. Petersburg departed from Hamburg before meeting Astor in New York.
