Roger Sweet, the toymaker behind 'He-Man,' has died at 91.

Roger Sweet was born in 1935 and grew up in Akron, Ohio. He earned a degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and later studied at the Institute of Design in Chicago. Before joining Mattel, he worked as an industrial designer for firms such as Walter Dorwin Teague Associates, contributing to projects for Boeing, Rubbermaid, Hoover, and Procter & Gamble. Sweet joined Mattel in the 1970s and became the lead designer of the company’s Preliminary Design Department. In 1982 he spearheaded the development of the Masters of the Universe toy line, creating the flagship character He‑Man, whose simple, powerful design helped launch a multi‑media franchise that became a cultural touchstone of the 1980s. In his later years Sweet lived in a care facility where he received treatment for dementia, supported by a GoFundMe campaign organized by his wife Marlene. He passed away on April 28, 2026, at the age of 91.
