Roderick Darryl Martin was born on April 7, 1954, and played college football at the University of Southern California after a stint at Los Angeles City College. He was selected in the 12th round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, beginning a 12‑year career spent entirely with the franchise.
Martin became a cornerstone of the Raiders' defense, starting 147 of his 165 games. He helped the team win two Super Bowls, and his most famous moment came in Super Bowl XV, where he recorded a record three interceptions against the Philadelphia Eagles, a feat that remains unmatched for a single player in a Super Bowl.
