Robert H. Rines
1922–2009Robert H. Rines obtained underwater photos later shown to be altered and methodologically flawed.
Particulars
Robert H. Rines obtained underwater photos that were later described as methodologically flawed because the sonar unit and camera‑strobe rig were unsecured and could drift into shallow water, and analysis of lighting patterns suggested some objects were very small and close to the camera.
In 1984 Discover and Skeptical Inquirer reported that the 1972 “flipper” photos had been painted over to create a diamond shape and that the original images were blurry, and in 1987 the “gargoyle head” photo was identified as a rotting tree stump now displayed at the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition in Drumnadrochit.
