Particulars

Robert Alexy was a German legal philosopher and jurist who taught at Kiel University from 1986 to 2013. Born in Oldenburg, he studied law and philosophy at the University of Göttingen, completing his dissertation "A Theory of Legal Argumentation" in 1976 and his habilitation "A Theory of Constitutional Rights" in 1984. His work sought to show that legal argumentation is a special case of general practical rationality, connecting legal reasoning to moral standards.

Alexy is best known for his principles theory of law, which formalized the technique of balancing fundamental rights and distinguished between rules and principles. His model became one of the few intellectual exports of German public law, particularly influential in the Spanish-speaking world, where he received numerous honorary doctorates from universities across Europe and South America.

He engaged in foundational debates with legal positivists and built on the work of thinkers such as Jürgen Habermas, Ronald Dworkin, and Gustav Radbruch. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. His publications were translated into up to twenty languages, and his students went on to hold professorships in South America and Asia.
