Robert Ginyard, born May 18, 1967, grew up in the Bronx before moving to Harlem, where he developed an early passion for hip‑hop and began performing at local talent shows. In the mid‑1980s he teamed up with DJ E‑Z Rock to form the duo Rob Base & DJ E‑Z Rock; their 1988 single “It Takes Two” became a crossover hit, reaching the top 40, earning platinum certification, and helping bring rap into the mainstream. He released a solo album, The Incredible Base, in 1989 and continued to tour and record, remaining a recognizable figure in the hip‑hop community; he celebrated his 59th birthday just three days before his death. Ginyard died on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family, after a private battle with cancer.
