Richard Francois Donat was born on June 1, 1941, into a prominent acting family; he was the nephew of Oscar‑winning British actor Robert Donat and the younger brother of Canadian actor Peter Donat. He grew up in Nova Scotia and began his career on stage before moving into screen work.
