Rhoda Strong Lowry

1849–1909

Sources claim Rhoda Strong Lowry helped Henry escape jail by assaulting the jailer and freeing him.

Historical departure

Particulars

Sources claim that when Henry escaped from jail, Rhoda Strong Lowry walked eighty miles from Scuffletown to Wilmington, brought him food, and seduced the jailer. She refused his initial advances but promised to return.

The next evening she visited again, entered the jailer's apartment, pretended to accept his advances, and when he removed his coat, gun belt, and key ring and bent down, she pulled a heavy lead pipe from under her skirt and knocked him unconscious. She then used the stolen keys to free Henry, and they paddled upstream in the Cape Fear River to Scuffletown.
