Raoul Vaneigem was born on 21 March 1934 in Lessines, Hainaut, Belgium. After studying Romance philology at the Free University of Brussels, he taught for a decade before becoming involved in the avant‑garde Letterist International. In 1961 he met Guy Debord and joined the Situationist International, contributing theoretical works that combined radical politics with cultural critique.

Vaneigem is best known for his 1967 book *The Revolution of Everyday Life*, a manifesto that inspired the student and worker movements of May 1968. Over his career he authored around fifty books covering philosophy, medieval heresies, and critiques of consumer society, and remained an active public intellectual, publishing essays, giving lectures, and participating in activist networks across Belgium, France, and Spain.

In his later years he split his time between Belgium, France and Barcelona, where he lived with his family. He died peacefully at his home in Barcelona on 28 July 2026 at the age of 92.
