Particulars

Rachel Rabin-Yaakov was born in Tel Aviv in 1925, the daughter of Nehemiah Rabin and Rosa Rabin (née Cohen), known as “Red Rosa,” a leading labor activist and member of the Tel Aviv City Council. She was the younger sister of future prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, three years her senior, and grew up in a home shaped by the values of public service and practical Zionism.

In 1943, at age 17, she was among the members of a HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed training group that settled a barren hill on the border with Lebanon, becoming one of the founders of Kibbutz Manara. She later helped establish the Emek Hahula regional school, which she managed, and became one of the leading educators in the Upper Galilee, earning many awards and honors for her educational and public service.

Rabin-Yaakov remained devoted to her border community for decades, speaking openly about the challenges of sustaining Kibbutz Manara, and was remembered by President Isaac Herzog as a model of educational and public service. She died on Friday at the age of 101; her funeral was held the following Monday.
