Particulars

Peter Nogly was a German footballer who spent the heart of his career as a defender and captain of Hamburger SV, playing all 320 of his Bundesliga matches for the club between 1969 and 1980. Nicknamed "Die Hamburger Eiche" (The Hamburg Oak) for his solidity in defence, he captained HSV to the DFB-Pokal in 1976, the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1977 and the German championship in 1979, and led the side to the 1980 European Cup final. He scored in the 1976 DFB-Pokal final victory over Kaiserslautern. He earned four caps for the West Germany national team in 1977 and was part of the squad that finished runners-up at Euro 1976. After leaving Hamburg he played in the North American Soccer League for the Edmonton Drillers and Tampa Bay Rowdies, earning NASL All-Star selections, and later returned to German football with Hertha BSC and FC St. Pauli. Following his playing days he worked extensively as a coach at clubs in northern Germany and served on the supervisory board of the HSV Fußball AG. He died on 24 September 2026 at the age of 79.
