Peter John Helm Jr. was born on December 22, 1941, in Toronto, Ontario, and began his acting career as a teenager, appearing in the 1959 television sitcom Too Young to Go Steady. He quickly moved to the stage, performing on Broadway alongside Jane Fonda and Joey Heatherton in the early 1960s.

During the 1960s Helm became a familiar face on American television, guest‑starring in popular series such as Wagon Train, The Donna Reed Show, The Fugitive, Bonanza, and The Farmer's Daughter.
