Patrick Lindesay Archibald Godfrey was born on 13 February 1933 in Finsbury, London, the son of Rev. Frederick Godfrey and Lois Mary Gladys Turner. He began his acting career after winning the Carleton Hobbs Bursary in 1956, which secured him a place in the BBC Radio Drama Company.

He made his film debut in Miss Julie (1972) and went on to appear in a string of notable British films, including A Room with a View, Maurice, The Remains of the Day, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dimensions and Les Misérables. Godfrey gained wider recognition for portraying Leonardo da Vinci in the 1998 Cinderella adaptation Ever After alongside Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott.

On television, Godfrey featured in a variety of series such as Doctor Who, Inspector Morse and many other programmes, while also maintaining a strong presence on the stage throughout his career.

He married actress Amanda Walker in 1960, and the couple had two children; their daughter Kate Godfrey later became Head of Voice for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Patrick Godfrey died at his home on 4 June 2026, aged 93.
