Patricio Guzmán was a Chilean documentary filmmaker whose work centered on memory, history, and the lasting imprint of the Pinochet dictatorship on his country. He gained international prominence with The Battle of Chile, a landmark trilogy filmed during the final months of Salvador Allende's government that documented the military coup of 1973 and its aftermath. Forced into exile, he worked for years in Cuba and Spain, building a career in documentary film and television while barred from returning to Chile.
