Norman Luxton

1876–1962

Norman Luxton sailed 10,000 miles on the canoe Tilikum, was injured when it struck a reef and abandoned the voyage in Fiji.

Historical departure

Particulars

In 1901 Norman Luxton moved to Vancouver, briefly worked for the weekly Town Topics, and met Captain John Voss in Victoria. They planned to purchase a 100‑year‑old Nootka dugout canoe named Tilikum and sail it around the world from Victoria to London.

Luxton journeyed about 10,000 miles on the Pacific Ocean with Voss for five months before Tilikum struck a reef, throwing Luxton into the water where coral badly cut his body. He abandoned the trip in Fiji, was taken to a hospital in Australia, and later went to Banff to recuperate.
