Marvin R. Shanken was the longtime editor and publisher of Wine Spectator magazine, a leading publication covering wine, spirits, and the hospitality industry. He began his career in 1972 when he bought the small industry newsletter Impact, which grew into a key resource for the wine and spirits trade. Under his leadership, Wine Spectator became one of the most influential voices in the wine world, and Shanken was instrumental in elevating the profile of the American wine business. He died Thursday in Manhattan at the age of 83.
