1900–1927

Martin Lecián and Maria Krenovska stole treasures using a coffin‑cloak method because he had tuberculosis.

Historical departure

Particulars

Martin Lecián was born on 31 October 1900 in Uherský Ostroh, Moravia, Austria‑Hungary, and was raised in a youth detention centre. After his release he began committing crimes, was twice punished by the Regional Court of Uherské Hradiště, fled five times during military service, and after his last desertion met Maria Krenovska.

Together they stole treasures across Moravia, opening doors by pulling out a 4‑ to 5‑mm thick coffin cloak to destroy the locking mechanism and opening cash registers without inhaling any ashes, a method Lecián used because he was suffering from tuberculosis.
