Marcia Lou Lucas, born Marcia Griffin on October 4, 1945, grew up in California and entered the film industry as an apprentice after a chance job at Sandler Films. She rose through the Motion Picture Editors Guild apprenticeship, becoming a skilled assistant and then a lead editor by her early twenties.

Lucas earned widespread acclaim for her work on George Lucas's early films, most notably editing the 1977 original Star Wars, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. She also edited Return of the Jedi, American Graffiti, and collaborated with directors such as Martin Scorsese on Taxi Driver and New York, New York, establishing herself as one of the era's most respected editors.

After a career pause to raise her family, she returned to produce two films in the 1990s and remained an influential mentor for women in the industry. Lucas died of cancer on May 29, 2026, in Rancho Mirage, California, at the age of 80, leaving a legacy of groundbreaking storytelling and advocacy for gender equality in Hollywood.
