Particulars

Manuel Pérez-Sanjulián Clemente, known professionally as Sanjulián, was a Spanish comic artist and illustrator born in Barcelona in 1941. He built an international career through the Josep Toutain agency Selecciones Ilustradas, breaking into the American market with work for Warren Publishing's genre horror magazines such as Creepy. His covers for Robert E. Howard's Conan novels made him a sought-after illustrator of heroic fantasy, and his work appeared on Spanish comic magazines of the 1980s including 1984, Creepy, and Cómix Internacional. He was ranked alongside masters such as Frank Frazetta, Richard Corben, and Boris Vallejo. His technique combined charcoal or pencil drawings with oil color, often on a large scale, and his pieces are held in private collections, including one owned by George Lucas that is part of the permanent collection of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. He also worked as a poster artist for Spanish fantasy films by Juan Piquer Simón, such as Misterio en la isla de los monstruos and Los diablos del mar. In the 21st century he continued illustrating for collectors, drawing classic genre subjects from King Kong and Ray Harryhausen's dinosaurs to Universal's Frankenstein. In 2021 the San Sebastián Fantastic and Horror Film Week honored him with a monographic exhibition. He died in Sitges on 14 October 2026 at the age of 85.
