Manuel Capdevila i Font
?–2026Catalan musician and musicographer who helped found Juventudes Musicales and championed the recovery of Catalan musical memory.
Particulars
Manuel Capdevila i Font was a Catalan musician and musicographer who played a central role in Barcelona's musical life from the 1950s onward. Alongside Jordi Roch, he was at the core of the germination of Juventudes Musicales, an organization that helped open Spain to international performers such as Alicia de Larrocha, Victoria de los Ángeles, and Rosa Sabater despite the political constraints of the Franco era.
He was the son of Manuel Capdevila i Rovira (1901-1983), a figure closely linked to the Associació de Música da Camera de Barcelona and a key source of knowledge about the composer Eduard Toldrà. Capdevila i Font worked to preserve and disseminate this legacy, writing substantial books on the recovery of Catalan musical memory and serving for years as a faithful translator of the poetic texts of the lied.
A familiar presence in the front rows of concert halls, he remained active into his final years, working to systematize and publish his partly unpublished memoirs and the patrimony he inherited.
