Ludwig Meyn

1820–1878

Ludwig Meyn began the first oil drilling in Dithmarschen in 1856, later receiving rights to exploit the bituminous sands.

Historical departure

Particulars

From 1846 Ludwig Meyn studied the production of gypsum and lime in the Segeberger Kalkberg and Lieth, and he collected over 1500 rock samples from Schleswig-Holstein that now form the foundation of the state university’s Geological Collection.

In the spring of 1856 Ludwig Meyn began drilling for oil in Dithmarschen with simple hand tools, the first ever oil drilling, and he found only bituminous sands and oil pastels; the Danish king later granted him exploitation rights for the sands, which produced bitumen, axle grease and petroleum from 1858.
