Particulars

Born in 1924 in Strasbourg, Lucien Lazare joined the Eclaireurs israélites de France and fought in the Resistance during the Second World War. He served in the Marc Haguenau company and took part in the liberation of Castres in 1944. After the war he worked as an educator and community leader in Strasbourg, then immigrated to Israel in 1968, where he directed a high school in Jerusalem. A self-described historian of the Resistance, he served on the Yad Vashem commission that designates the Righteous Among the Nations and published numerous books on the Resistance as well as a dictionary of the Righteous of France. A man of the left who championed nonviolence, he described the Righteous of France who sheltered Jews at peril of their own lives as nonviolent resisters. He died in Jerusalem on 22 September 2026 at the age of 101.
