Particulars
Leonardo Netto was a Brazilian music industry executive and manager who played a decisive behind-the-scenes role in Brazilian popular music. He began managing Marisa Monte's career in 1987, from the singer's first cult shows in Rio de Janeiro, and was widely credited with building her star aura through carefully orchestrated marketing and anti-marketing strategies around each album and tour. He also helped conceive the Tribalistas project in 2001 with Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes, and Carlinhos Brown, and directed shows such as Universo particular and Verdade, uma ilusão in partnership with the artist and Cláudio Torres.
His career in music began well before Marisa Monte. In 1976 he co-founded the pioneering Rio de Janeiro disco Frenetic Dancin' Days with Nelson Motta, the stage where the Frenéticas vocal group emerged. During the 1970s he joined the marketing department of the newly created Warner label, becoming a protégé of executive André Midani, under whose guidance he reshaped the image of Elis Regina. He also managed singers Adriana Calcanhotto, Cássia Eller, and Rita Lee, as well as entertainer Regina Casé.
Affected by a long illness that took him out of the music scene in 2018, Netto died on 29 October 2026. He was remembered by artists and colleagues as a fundamental figure in the management of Brazilian music careers.
