In December 1979, Lê Thanh Vân was arrested in District 10 for impersonating an army captain and sentenced to several months imprisonment. In March 1990, she was arrested in District 5 for forgeries and thefts and imprisoned for 18 months.

After her release, she worked as caretaker for the Chung family. On 24 October 1992, the family was hospitalized after eating chicken noodles she prepared; Bùi, the wife of Mr Chung, died. The surviving members accused Vân of deliberately poisoning the meals and requested an autopsy, which found intoxication but insufficient evidence for murder; Vân was convicted of fraud and sentenced to four years imprisonment.
