Kjell Nilsson was a Swedish Olympic-class weightlifter and actor, best known for his imposing role as the main antagonist Lord Humungus in the 1981 post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max 2 (also known as The Road Warrior). Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Nilsson moved to Australia in 1980 to train Swedish athletes for the Moscow Olympics. While in Australia, he was encouraged by his wife, actress Kate Ferguson, to pursue a career in the Australian film industry. His powerful physical presence and bald, scarred head made him a memorable figure in the film, where he led a gang of marauders terrorizing a group of settlers. Time magazine praised his performance, noting the malevolence that seemed to pulse visibly through his appearance. Following his breakout role, Nilsson appeared in other films such as The Pirate Movie (1982) and various television projects. He passed away on July 3, 2026, after a prolonged battle with kidney disease.
