Historical departure

Particulars

Karl Sim noticed his school art being auctioned as originals of other artists and then began forging works by Frances Hodgkins, Colin McCahon, Charles F. Goldie and others. He sold forged paintings and drawings from his antique and wine shop in Foxton, using the shop to create provenance and signing the artists' names; he even sold a van Dyck copy for about $600.

Police raided Sim's shop in 1985 after the volume of artwork raised suspicion and arrested him, noting spelling errors in van der Velden forgeries. He was convicted of 40 counts of forgery, sentenced to 200 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine, changed his name to Carl Fedor Goldie, and continued forging art through associates until shortly before his death.
