He was widely recognized as one of the most influential writer-directors in Tamil cinema during the 1980s. Bhagyaraj began his career in the mid-1970s as an assistant director under G. Ramakrishnan and Bharathiraja before transitioning into writing scripts and dialogues. He made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979 and often starred in the lead roles of his own films, establishing himself as an actor-auteur. His films were noted for their witty dialogues, double entendres, and socially relevant themes.
Over his career, Bhagyaraj wrote and directed over 25 films and acted in more than 75.
