Particulars
June Jones was an American football coach and player best known for his innovative run-and-shoot offense and his transformative tenure as head coach of the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors. After playing quarterback at Hawai'i, Portland State, and Oregon, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent and spent four seasons backing up Steve Bartkowski, starting five games in his NFL career. His coaching career began soon after his playing days ended, and he rose to become head coach of the Falcons from 1994 to 1996 before serving as interim head coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1998. He then returned to Hawai'i, where he led the Rainbow Warriors to conference titles in 1999 and 2007. The 2007 season was historic, as Hawai'i went 12-0 and made the school's first-ever BCS bowl appearance at the Sugar Bowl. Jones later coached at SMU, and his influence extended through players such as Timmy Chang, who became the NCAA's all-time passing yards leader under his tutelage and later succeeded him as Hawai'i's head coach. He was remembered by colleagues and former players as a visionary who revolutionized the game and put Hawai'i football on the map.
